Don’t keep chewing on your thoughts

It’s not easy when you have anxiety. As a person who battles it, when someone says “don’t think about it too much” makes it worse. 

When I got diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder back in January, I felt it was about time. As a behavioral science major, I’ve various disorders so I had a pretty good understanding of them. 

I remember my brother asked me,”how does anxiety feel like?” I compare it to always being worried about things, playing out scenarios in your head, thinking of what if, and constantly thinking of past situations. 

Coming from a religious family, many thought I needed prayers. I think prayers are always good and welcome (I talk to God everyday) however; I think that God has placed things on Earth that can help with mental health (therapist, medication, etc.)

I believe the best way for me to manage my anxiety is mediation, excerise, prayer, therapy, and medication. It’s not easy, there’s days when it’s bad but it’s not as bad as it used to be. 

As I’m going through my personal ups and downs, I get overwhelmed but key for me is to keep calm and breathe. That’s the only thing you can do. Also, praying and giving it to God. 

I was debating to share my story about my mental illness, but by sharing I believe it breaks the stigma and inspire others to seek treatment if needed.
